The 2009 Louisville Slugger Independence Day Softball Tournament will mark the 13th year for the tournament in Boulder, and it’s been increasingly successful. The event has a national tournament flavor and level of competition. This year we'll have one hundred twelve 18U and forty-eight 16U teams from 29 states. They represent all regions of the country, from coast-to-coast and border-to-border.

We are proud of the quality of the tournament. Congratulations to teams that played in Boulder in 2008 and excelled in end-of-the-season championship play. We're pleased to recognize the 40 teams from last years tournament that qualified to play in the 2008 ASA 18 Gold championships, with twenty of last years top twenty four finishers participating in this years event. Forty of the sixty four teams who participated in the 2008 Gold championship will also be participating in this years tournament. 2008 tournament teams were also very successful at the ASA 18A and 16A championships.

One of the main objectives of the tournament is to provide participating girls an opportunity for exposure before college coaches in attendance. In 2008, 342 coaches representing 217 colleges registered for the tournament. Most were NCAA Division I schools, but Div II, Div III, NAIA, and JC were also in attendance.

In 2009 we will host two separate 18U tournaments.

At the 18U 80 team tournament in Boulder games are played at two complexes: the Stazio ballfields (7 fields) located two blocks north of Arapahoe on 63rd Street and the East Mapleton complex (3 fields) at Mapleton and 29th Streets. Fields are provided and maintained by the City of Boulder, Parks and Recreation Department.

The 18U 32 team tournament in Louisville will be played at the Louisville Sports Complex in Louisville, which is maintained by the City of Louisville. Sunday finals will be played in Boulder.

The 16U 48 team tournament will be played at the Garden Acres Complex in Longmont, and at Clark Centennial Park. Fields are maintained by the City of Longmont. Sunday finals will also be played in Boulder.

There is a seven game guarantee. All teams play six pool games over Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Pool results are used to seed teams into a single elimination bracket to be contested on Saturday and Sunday.

All 18U games will feature a pitching distance of 43 feet.

A $25 tournament admission pass will be available at the gate for adults and children over 12 years old. The daily admission is $10. Coaches and players are admitted for free.

Stay at the University of Colroado at Boulder

See the Lodging Page for more details.

Health and Safety

Stadium Medical, Inc. will be providing EMT and paramedic support at all playing sites. Please seek them out for help with any injuries and advice on prevention. At this altitude it's important to avoid dehydration by drinking lots of fluids and to avoid sunburn by using sun screen.

MOSQUITO CONTROL. In the past, the mosquito-borne West Nile virus has been present in Colorado. You should protect yourself. Especially during the dusk and evening hours, use DEET-enhanced mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves and pants.

About Boulder

One of the very attractive aspects of the tournament is the locale -- the City of Boulder. Boulder is a special place to visit. It sits at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills with a population of about 100,000 and is the home of the University of Colorado. Rocky Mountain National Park is about an hour’s drive to the northwest (you can throw snowballs in July) and Denver is about 30 minutes southeast. The pedestrian-only, outdoor downtown mall offers local culture from street performers to outdoor cafes. The many recreational opportunities range from inline skating or jogging along the Boulder Creek path to riding the many mountain bike trails in the foothills.

Sponsors

We are pleased that Louisville Slugger is again our primary sponsor, as it has been since the inception of the tournament. Diamond Sports provides the optic yellow tournament balls. Adidas will again host a dinner for all participating players and coaches Tuesday evening, as well as the All-Star Games. The tournament is organized and hosted by the Boulder Competitive Girls Softball Organization, an all-volunteer organization. Profits derived from the tournament go to support girls softball in Boulder.
