2008 Team Highlights

Colorado Stars 18 Gold
We had a terrific summer of softball traveling first to the Las Vegas Showcase where Mikey Kenny hit a Grand Slam against the Corona Angles which finished 2nd at Gold Nationals and Lisa Fernandez who was watching autograph the ball. We then traveled to Indianapolis for the Gold Sector Tournament finishing 3 -2. In Boulder the next weekend at the Independence Day Tournament we finished 7th in pool play. Then won 3 straight bracket games and losing late Saturday night giving us a 9th place finish out of 80 teams the best any Colorado team has ever done. The next weekend in Oklahoma City at the Hall of Fame Tournament we finished 2-2 and went extra innings in 2 games. Back in Boulder the following weekend at the Regional Qualifier we lost our first game where pitcher Kelsey O’Brien broke her wrist. Giana Zimmerman pitched the next 11 innings and Melisa Ryba pitched the next 12 innings winning three games back to back to back with the last game going extra innings to qualify for Gold Nationals. Melisa had only pitched 5 games all year but the team behind her belted out 6 home runs for the tournament. At Gold Nationals we played well but had 2 losses 1-0 and 2-1 but overall a great experience for the young women on this team. Here is the list of Colleges the Players have committed to.

Kelsey Alsdorf; University of Kansas

Stacy Ball; Mesa State

Mikey Kenney; Texas Tech

Cassie Long; Regis University

Liz Lucas; Leigh University Pennsylvania

Breana Mathews; Pratt Kansas

Kelsey O’Brien; New Mexico State

Melisa Ryba; Northern Colorado

Giana Zimmerman: Southeast Missouri State

18A Comets
I would first like to thank all the players and their parents. They were a great group of girls and the parents supported the team all year. I also had a wonderful coaching staff. Bill Schoepflin, Amber Sivetts and Marcus McConnell. These three coaches worked very hard with the girls and kept me in line as well. I would also like to thank Dan Burns and the Boulder Valley Softball Association. A special thanks to Dave and Michelle Pineda for all their help at the Independence Day tournament.

As a team we did not set any Colorado records for wins in a single season. We ended up a little over 500 with wins on the year. I believe that games won, is not always how a team should be measured. I do know that this group of girls always displayed character and sportsmanship. When we struggled with our play at times, the team took full accountability. They did not point fingers or place blame, they worked as hard as they could.

I could not have asked for a better group of personalities. Everyone had a great sense of humor and they all got along with each other.

I do know that when everyone was at there best, we were unbeatable. We went to Florida , won a couple games and had a great time at Disney World. We ended our season at the Champions Cup in California . We faced some of the best teams in California and came away with two wins.

Every senior player on the team is playing in college. Good luck to all in College and High School.

Thanks girls for my best year ever!

16A Comets
16u Comets (Sakamoto) finished the season at 62-23-2 and were champions of the Pike Peak Invitational and ASA State. Playing up in 18u for the majority of the season, the Comets finished with back-to-back nationals ending up 4th at Triple Crown Nationals going 7-2 while only losing to the eventual champions and runner-up both by one run. The next week we went to Owensboro, KY for ASA nationals where we finished T49 out of 144 going 2-2 in elimination.

14B Comets - Aspegren
This team started the season playing 14B ball and after winning several tournaments moved to 14A ball for the second half of the season. This undoubtedly aided the team in their end of season success in Park City Utah at Triple Crown Nationals. Pool play began well with 2 solid wins over the Utah She Devils 2-1and later over the Acers from Washington 8-6. Our next day of pool was a little tougher when we dropped two, first to the Arizona Quicksilver 8-2 and later in the day 9-5 to the California Storm. Yet through it all, we seemed to gain confidence that would prove useful later in the tournament.

We entered International Bracket Play on Thursday and easily handled our first opponent, the Colorado Redwings 14-1. On Friday we faced a strong Arizona Sun Divas team with strong pitching and hitters, winning 3-2. We seemed to relax a bit in the next game and took a loss to the Colorado Rage 6-0. After this we had to win to stay alive.

We entered elimination play on Saturday at 8:00 AM facing a solid team, Bad to the Bone from California, that had beaten one of our 14A teams the week before. We seemed to have great focus and poise, never became rattled and won 7-1. The rest of the day was back to back play, with meals being served between innings and what few minutes we had between games. During this marathon day, all 10 athletes batted. We carried no subs. Our next opponent was solid Utah Catzz team who we sent home after a 5-2 win. At this point we had one game left before entering the Championship game. Here we faced the Fort Collin Stars, an older team that had eliminated us earlier in the year in a similar situation. This game moved along with us struggling to hit our stride. Finally, in the 7th inning, trailing 8-3, we scored 7 runs to win the game 10-8 and earn a birth in the Championship game. Here we faced the Loveland Rage. We played well, made some great plays and had our chances, yet after 7 innings took the Runner-Up Trophy after a 3-0 loss. We completed play with 11 games recorded, every player played in each game and a solid showing at Triple Crown Nationals with a Runner-Up Trophy in our final game.

10U Comets
The 10U 2008 Comets had a terrific first season in competitive softball. The girls participated in eight tournaments placing in half of them. We finished with two 2nd place finishes and two 3rd place finishes. The Comets strong pitching and outstanding defense led them to an overall record of 25 wins, 18 losses, and tie (25-18-1). The girls developed their skills to become one of the top first year 10U teams in Colorado .
